Norgo looked around his new surroundings and dropped to one knee as he recognized the throne room of Ul, Lord of Creatures, God of Justice and Light. The room itself was modest, neat and tidy, with white marble pillars along the length. Tapestries of various creatures adorned the sides, depicting creatures ranging from the lowly rat to the powerful dragon, and the mischivious demon. "My lord, you have summoned me, your servant. I ask of you, what is your will?"
Ul rose from his amystyst throne and walked down to his avatar "Rise Norgo, you know that I do not expect that from you. You have been like a son to me and have always been a great joy in my life. The time has come for you and I to talk of the future. Norgo, I know that what I am about to say will be difficult for you to comprehend, but it is time that I moved on. I have too long been upon the world known as the Fogotten Realms. Other worlds need and desire my attention. It is time I moved on to my other responibilities. However, I do not wish to leave this world and my interests in it unprotected."
"I do not understand my Lord" said Norgo as he rose to his feet to stand beside his god. "Are you saying that you are leaving us? My Lord, what shall we do without you to protect us, to guide us. We have long depended upon you to help us in our times of need."
"I know that Norgo, and that is why I am not leaving you without assurances. Norgo, I am about to bestow upon you the greatest blessing, and the greatest curse that I know. I am giving you a portion of my power, and with it, godhood. Norgo I need you to be my caretaker upon this world. Your leadership and knowledge will be put to the test, and you must aid your followers. I am sorry to tell you however, that when I leave this world, My followers will forget me, for that is the nature of the gods. Our followers link to us is tenuous at the best, and with distance, it grows cold and weak. When we return, It is re-awakened within them, but not as strong. Only time builds the necessary bonds between god and follower. Having said that, I am sorry to inform you that you must begin anew, and attract a following of your own."
Norgo thought for a moment. Godhood. That certainly was a blessing! But how was it a curse? "My Lord, I understand how this can be a blessing, but how can it be a curse as well?"
Ul smiled, "Because Norgo, along with power, comes responsibiltiy. And you will start out as powerless as a new babe. Your power is attained from your followers. Their support is what helps you to grow. To start with, you will be unable to even summon the lowest of creatures. But, as your followers multiply and spread across the realms, your power will grow. Your responsibiltiy is your curse, Norgo. You must treat your followers with respect. Help them to grow. Teach them from your knowledge. As your followers grow, so do you."
Looking around, Norgo noted that the way he saw things was beginning to change. No longer was he just the faithful avatar of Ul. He was to become a god. The thought of it weighed heavily on his mind, and he knew that he would make mistakes as he went along. But that is to be expected. "Thank you my Lord, this is a duty I accept with a heavy heart, for you are leaving this world. Will I ever see you again?'
"You may Norgo, since I do travel a lot. But I will not influence my power upon the forgotten world again. This place is yours to guide my son. From this day on, you are no longer Norgo the avatar. You will be known as Ul-mar, Lord of Creatures, God of Justice and Knowledge." And with that, the mists began to envolope Ul, fading him from this existance.
"My Lord! What shall I do, how shall I recruit my followers...." cried Ul-mar, but it was too late. Ul was gone. Ul-mar thought to himself about the teachings of Ul. He began to concentrate, and before him appeared a small demon. It was a peculiar demon, with spectacles, a green jacket and plaid pants! Before the demon was a small table, with a quill pen and a small inkwell.
"You summoned me? What would you like master" squeeked the demon. It voice had a combination of nasal tones with a bit of slate sliding along granite quality to it. The demon fidgeted in it's seat, almost quivering with excitement. Several times it reached for the quill, waiting for Ul-mar to dictate.
"First, what is your name demon?" Ul-mar asked. Taken aback by this unexpected courtesy the demon stammered "M - m- my name is Hugh. Hugh Demon master."
Ul-mar chuckled at that. Demons always had odd names, often based upon puns. "Well Hugh, Write this down. The title of this will be the Covenant of Ul-mar."
Hugh snapped up the quill and wrote as fast as Ul-mar could speak.
